ALVA.NOTO
Carsten Nicolai is a sound artist. He uses the stage names Alva Noto, Noto
and Aleph-1. He is a member of the music groups Diamond Version with Olaf
Bender (Byetone), Signal with Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender, Cyclo
with Ryoji Ikeda, and Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto with Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Nicolai was born in Chemnitz, Saxony, Germany (then Karl-Marx-Stadt,
Saxony, East Germany) in 1965. He studied architecture and landscape
design before pursuing art. In 1999 he founded Raster-Noton.

PEOPLE OF THE NORTH
People of the North is Kid Millions (drums) and Bobby Matador (keyboard,
synth, vocals) of Oneida, and Sub Contra is their Thrill Jockey debut.
While their sound, like Oneida’s, is constantly shifting and absorbing new
concepts and ideas, Sub Contra is a work that fully embraces tumult and
darkness in startling and dramatic ways. People of the North have been an
active entity since 2003, but it wasn’t until 2010 with the release of
Deep Tissue on their own Brah imprint and Steep Formations, which followed
in 2012, that recordings became an important part of the duo’s identity.
Sub Contra also features contributions from Shahin Motia and Barry London
of Oneida.

DOT WIGGIN BAND
When I came across the Shaggs in the early 80's I found their music both
annoying and endearing. Over the years the combination of out of tune
guitars and bizarre rhythms became a periodic guilty pleasure I endulged
in. But to hear that Dot Wiggin, after almost 40 years, has made another
album inspired me to rush out and get a copy. I didn't know what to expect
but I was most pleasantly surprised. It won't be everyone's idea of great
music but the authenticity and sweetness of Dot Wiggin and her songs is a
delight. One of those rock and roll stories that defintely needs to be
told. After almost a 40 year absence, and in her mid-sixties, Dot and the
wonderful musicians with her have created an album that even non-Shaggs
aficianados can enjoy! Hope there is more coming!

Thanks for reading.

Enjoy your week end.

I hope to hear from you asap.

All the best.

Alain
