Dear all, I’m booking some dates for GARY LUCAS and the NIGHTINGALES GARY LUCAS (USA) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-_aatyJwSg Availability: around mid May 2014 onwards Territory: Europe THE NIGHTINGALES (UK) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj31L9XuZ8I Availability: between 27th May and 7th June 2014 Territory: Benelux GARY LUCAS 952, Syracuse, New York, USA. Although US guitarist Lucas has issued several solo albums on his own over the years, he is probably best known for his work with others, including a brief stint with avant garde icon Captain Beefheart, and co-writing a few of Jeff Buckley’s best compositions. Raised in Syracuse, New York, USA, Lucas started off first as a French horn player as a youngster, before focusing on guitar. Lucas continued to play music even during a period at Yale University (where he studied English literature), and by the early 70s, had become a great admirer of Captain Beefheart. After a bid to convince him to let the up-and-coming guitarist join his band failed (but resulted in a friendship), Lucas focused his attention elsewhere, including composing the soundtrack of the 1971 documentary Aquatic Ecology and playing guitar at the 1973 European premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. After a few other musical detours had run their course through the 70s, Lucas finally got his wish and was invited to join up with Captain Beefheart, playing on the albums Doc At The Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream For Crow (1982). Upon Beefheart’s retirement from music, Lucas turned his attention to producing recordings by other artists, including Peter Gordon’s Innocent and Tim Berne’s Fulton Street Maul. By the late 80s, Lucas’ desire to play his own music had returned, as he became part of the burgeoning cutting edge scene at New York City’s Knitting Factory. It was around this time that Lucas collaborated with keyboard player Walter Horn on a score for an obscure German film from the 20s, titled The Golem, as well as forming his own band, Gods And Monsters (which over time would include future notable recording artists such as Matthew Sweet and Buckley). The 90s saw Lucas finally launch a proper solo career, as he issued several releases throughout the decade. He also guested on recordings by countless other artists, including Lori Carson, Kevin Coyne, Sophie B. Hawkins, and Joan Osborne, in addition to earning co-writing credits for ‘Mojo Pin’ and the title track from Buckley’s classic 1994 debut, Grace. He also formed the Du-Tels, a psychedelic acoustic folk duo with Peter Stampfel, in 1994. A total of three Lucas releases appeared on the marketplace in 2000, the studio release Street Of Lost Brothers and a pair of compilations. Two years later his score for the HBO documentary LaLee’s Kin received an Oscar nomination. THE NIGHTINGALES Nightingales are a British post-punk/alternative rock band formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England. The original members were Robert Lloyd on vocals, Joe Crow on guitar, Eamonn Duffy on bass and Paul Apperley on drums, all formerly of The Prefects. The band, before splitting up, played more sessions on John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 show than any other band excluding The Fall and Half Man Half Biscuit.[1] The band reunited in 2004 featuring mainstay/band leader Lloyd, original Prefects guitarist Alan Apperley, ex-Nightingales Byrchmore and Duffy, plus former PWEI drummer Robert « Fuzz » Townshend. This line-up released four 7-inch singles in 2004/5 before Townshend was replaced by Aaron Moore of Volcano The Bear. Their first three albums were reissued in 2005. Live appearances include radio sessions for Marc Riley’s Rocket Science on BBC 6 Music, John Kennedy’s XFM show, Terre T’s Cherry Blossom Clinic on WFMU (USA) and Another Nice Mess (NL) in addition to gigs around England. I hope to hrear from you asap. Regards. Alain Some Noise C/O Alain Bolle PO BOX 43 1050 Brussels 5 Belgium info@somenoise.be https://debloque.wordpress.com http://www.lesateliersclaus.com
