NOCTURNE

Since 1995 Saphi has been behind the project Nocturne. Its first

concerns for the music creation and conceptualization have been:

Collective memory, guilt, as well as the notion of choice and free will.

Those questions and preoccupations have also been raised by the

association on Artschock of which Nocturne represents the sonic image.

This is a Total happening experience. Like Mabuse is the man behind the

curtain, Saphi is the man behind his machines. He slowly gets off them

and the transfer is proceeding before our eyes. He’s deeply and

personally involved, his attitudes evolve and his expressions change and

alter contributing a genuine performance.

LIONEL MARCHETTI

Since 1989 Lionel Marchetti has been in charge of the electroacoustic

studio at Lyon 2 University’s Training Center for Musicians Mentoring

at Schools – CFMI de Lyon – were he leads, one month a year, a workshop

on “loudspeaker art”, recorded sound, concrete music,

electroacoustic techniques and combines theoretical and practical

approaches.

He regularly performs his concrete compositions in acousmatic concerts

on various systems for the spacialisation of sound (4, 8, 12

loudspeakers or more).

MIND OVER MIRRORS

MIND OVER MIRRORS, the evolving project of Jaime Fennelly and more

recently, Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux, deploys modest acoustic

constituent materials—an Indian pedal harmonium and the human

voice—to produce roiling, meditative music that both simulates the

swells and troughs of synthesized electronics and conjures the ceaseless

rhythms of tidal surges. While we can point out referential sonic

compass points—G.I. Gurdjieff’s harmonium improvisations; certain

particularly harmonically viscous recordings of Sacred Harp singers;

Edward Artemiev’s soundtracks to Tarkovsky films—in its prayerful

patience, its simultaneously formal and folk aspects, and its unabashed

(if intermittently anxious) beauty, it doesn’t sound much like

anything else being made today. There is an easy, and unusual,

confluence of praise and play at work in Jaime’s music that catalyzes

heady reverie.

SAM SHALABI

Sam Shalabi is a longtime fixture on the Montreal free improv and

experimental post-rock scenes, both as a solo artist and as the leader

of the Shalabi Effect. Osama Shalabi (who was professionally known as

Sam long before Osama bin Laden made his first name infamous) was born

in Tripoli, Libya, in 1964 to Egyptian parents; his family emigrated to

Canada’s Prince Edward Island when he was five. Shalabi’s Middle

Eastern heritage is a major part of his work, from his regular use of

the oud (the lute-like instrument that’s as important to most Middle

Eastern music as the guitar is to rock & roll) to the themes of albums

like 2003’s Osama, a fiercely political but entirely human response to

the geopolitical turmoil following the September 9, 2001, terrorist

attacks. Attracted to punk rock in his teens, Shalabi toiled on the

lower rungs of Montreal’s punk scene, but began gravitating toward

more experimental pursuits in the 1990s.

AlonEAlienZ

AlonEAlienZ is my solo project where I explore different kind of sounds

and univers.

With a guitar, some effect box and a loop station, I travel somewhere

between Punk, Punk-Rock, Out-Rock and Free.

Between Robert Fripp, Explosion in the Sky, Sonic Youth and the Sun City

Girls. Between Hard and Sweet.

Between composition and improvisation.

And with more than fifty solo concerts behind me, I can say that I’ve

never done the same show twice.

JESUS IS MY SON

Jesus is my son is the solo project of Grégory Duby. This project is a

minimal approach of folk music played on electric guitar. It is a desire

of slowness, loneliness and

power. It is a long trip where eternity is between notes. Jesus is my

son impels the audience to listen contemplatively to the electric

guitar.

PEKKO KAPPI

Pekko Kappi is a Finnish neo-folk music composer, singer and a player of

Jouhikko, the ancient Finnish-Karelian bowed lyre. He incorporates

elements from blues and rock and experimental archaic chaos. His music

has been described as ‘swaying between the foul and lovely dirty and

pure

As a singer and a researcher he is well-versed in the Finnish

runo-singing tradition among the older layers of Finnish folk songs. His

debut album « Jos ken pahoin uneksii » was released in 2007 and nominated

for the Finnish ethno-grammy award. The second full-lenght album « Vuonna

’86 » was released in February 2010 and received the Folk Music Album of

the Year-award in Finland. Kappi has a strong ethnomusical approach in

his work, but has worked with various artists across the differenet

genres of music around the world.

I hope to hear from you very soon.

Thanks for reading and listening.

All the best.
