NEEDLE AND THE PAIN REACTION
Needle and the Pain Reaction is an energetic dark groovy sonic guitar
punk band. More then 15 years active in the underground scene, they’re
known for their DIY approach, their strong live reputation, their
legenday gureilla concerts and European and Canadian tours. Influenced
by bands as The Jezus Lizard, Metz, Helmet, Afghan Wigs, TAD.

THE POP GROUP feat. DENNIS BOVELL
Last year, seminal English experimental rockers The Pop Group released
their first album in 20 years. Citizen Zombie saw the band teaming
with mega-producer Paul Epworth, known for his work with fellow UK
artists Adele and Coldplay. Now, however, the band has returned to
their roots as they set to work on their follow-up, re-teaming with
Dennis “Blackbeard” Bovell, producer of their 1979 debut LP, Y.
Bovell is an iconic producer who’s worked with the likes of Fela Kuti,
The Slits, The Thompson Twins, and others. His contributions to Y
helped launch The Pop Group into the politically charged, avant-garde
rock provocateurs that rose to critical acclaim in the late ’70s. 37
years later, he’s back in the studio with the group, and he’s not
alone; Hank Shocklee of the Bomb Squad (Public Enemy) is also working
on the new record.

LOS SIQUICOS LITORALENOS
These guys grew from Cucumelo spores on the humid underside of cow patties in Corrientes, Argentina. They make shamanic cumbia folklore with an energy that sprouts from whatever enters their bloodstream.

JASON KAHN
Jason Kahn is a musician, artist and writer. He was born 1960 in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He re-located to Europe in 1990 and is currently based in Zürich.
As an electronic musician, vocalist and drummer Kahn collaborates regularly with many musicians, both in improvised settings and in the context of graphical scores which he composes for specific groups.
Kahn has exhibited his installations in museums, galleries, art spaces and public sites internationally. These works focus on the idea of space: the conceptual and physical juncture points, its production and dissolution, and our relation to it as a political, social and environmental medium.
Kahn’s other activities include sound pieces for radio, film, dance and theater. He has also designed numerous CD, LP and cassette covers. As a writer, his work has appeared in books, magazines and as liner notes to many audio publications.

2 double dates between 4 great players

The first meeting is between Bill Orcutt (USA) and Okkyung Lee (South Korea). Individually these players have focussed on an idiosyncratic approach to their chosen instruments and technique. Okkyung is one of the most singular voices to compromise the cello’s ‘classical’ origin, whilst Orcutt has spent many years developing a unique abstraction of traditional guitar blues.

Chris Corsano (USA) is a unique drummer, with his own unique style. From explosive to mesmerizing to abstract to rough. We could listen to him for hours and would recommend someone to make an action doll out of this figure. On 26th September Chris will be teaming up with Portuguese saxophonist (alto, C melody, baritone, and tenor) Rodrigo Amado (PT) who specializes in free-form, composition-in-the-moment jazz. With diverse musical interests, he explored how improvisation is handled in other genres.

OVO
OvO has always been one of the most active bands in the worldwide noisy rock scene. They have been known pretty much everywhere through their 700 and more gigs, their large amount of releases, including albums, singles, collaborations, tracks on compilations, dvds, and for their original, unique music.

JOHN CHANTLER
John Chantler is a musician and organiser living in Stockholm, Sweden working with electronics, organs and acoustics. He draws on a domestic reimagining of the traditions of studio based electronic music/musique concrete and 20th century minimalism and delivers this with brash revitalized energy. ‘Which way to leave?’ is his latest LP for Lawrence English’s ROOM40 label and the self-reflexive sequencing that tracks the sub-harmonic series in the opening blast of ‘Falling Forward’ positions the record as Chantler’s most explicitly melodic while the record’s abrupt cuts, deft variations of density and unexpected diversions are happily explored with headlong dives into ravishing texture and extended stretches of surface stasis.

ALARIC
Alaric began their journey in 2008 with an eye toward creating a moody and compelling music of a sort not often performed in this day and age. A different concept of doom, if you will. Beginning with influences from such progenitors as Killing Joke and Christian Death to the darkest, heaviest punk bands and the most epic psychedelia, the band has dedicated itself to creating a shadowy electric guitar driven music that is truly their own. When they moved to document their songs on their first album, reviews were glowing. Zero Tolerance Magazine proclaimed, “Morbid, threatening and obsidian… Album of the Year by a long shot. » In a review of their split with Atriarch,  CVLT Nation wrote, “…one experiences an immersion in watery black textures as if drawn welcomingly into a drowning, slowly swirling, abyss.”

TWOMANTING
TwoManTing was formed in 2004 when Sierra Leonean drummer Jah-man Aggrey, and guitarist Jon Lewis were playing together as part of dance band, Le Cod Afrique, at venues such as Montreux Jazz Festival and WOMAD.
With clever use of loops and no small amount of enthusiastic musicality and inventiveness, they pitch their song choices just right in order to make the public smile and give them something to think about.

EDDY DETROIT
Where to start with Eddy Detroit? Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, it was there, in 1966, that he was in attendance for the first Iguanas gigs (Iggy Stooge’s first band). He joined the White Panther party in Detroit and was « there » for the pre-punk sounds of The Stooges and MC5 (« We all smoked dope on the state Capitol and got beat up by the cops »). In the early ’70s he traveled to London, where he stalked Marc Bolan and tried to seduce Tony Visconti’s then-girlfriend Mary Hopkin. It was with Ms. Hopkin, when he was dropping off a demo tape at the Apple store, that he witnessed the moment when Ringo found out that The Beatles had broken up! (We’ve got the pictures to prove it!) In the mid-’70s, Detroit settled in Hollywood and started The Terminal Wave Band (bongo/synth/punk) which was the soundtrack to the hippy/biker/S&M/satanic/polyamorous scene that Detroit ruled in dingy, underground LA — that’s when he wasn’t trying to seduce Nico (The Velvet Underground) to become one of his muses and lovers (« True story bub »). When rents in LA got too much for an acid-fried biker/S&M/punk, Eddy moved to Phoenix, AZ, and was seminal in fostering one of the most interesting underground musical scenes of the early ’80s. He was an unofficial member of the Sun City Girls, toured with the Meat Puppets and Mighty Sphincter, and was the pith-helmeted shaman-in-residence at his club The Grotto!

L’Ocelle Mare: Thomas Bonvalet (FR) + Linus Vandewolken (B) + Chouk Bwa Libète (HTI)

L’Ocelle Mare / Thomas Bonvalet (FR) : banjo électrifié, orgue à bouche, métronome mécanique à cloche, plaques d’harmonica, frappements de pieds et de mains, diapasons, sifflements, harmonica, grelots. Le projet solitaire de Thomas Bonvalet a d’abord été centré sur la guitare classique, prenant des formes courtes, dynamiques et abruptes et se limitant exclusivement aux possibilités acoustiques de l’instrument . Une posture radicale constamment menacée de se mettre dans l’impasse, se voyant contrainte à la métamorphose et au mouvement. L’instrument est ainsi devenu de moins en moins identifiable, absorbant et déviant de leur usage les objets sonores présents en marge (métronomes, diapasons, etc.), intégrant le souffle et les sons résultants du geste instrumental premier, se fragmentant et tentant de faire apparaître une nouvelle figure fugace. L’amplification a elle aussi pris peu à peu une place essentielle dans ce nouvel instrumentarium/organisme. Il reste cependant cette même voix sous-jacente et cette grande considération pour les détails, la tension et les possibles points de surgissement.

Linus Vandewolken (B)
Two years after a first public performance on top of a slag heap in Liège & over a year since the release of the acclaimed »Hommel op Aarde«, LINUS VANDEWOLKEN takes us to »Flandra Transgreso«, a submerged land of introspection & melancholy.

In the far reaches of Niemandaal, political, social & personal climates have changed… the water is coming to flood the Earth. The tuning becomes minor, the voice & flutes disappear. We hear the longing for lost friends, the desire for a land where the governments respect their people, the search for a grain of hope.

Chouk Bwa Libète (HTI)
Chouk Bwa” means tree stump, a reference to the words of Toussaint Louverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution in the late 18th century, as he prepared to face exile in France: “By overthrowing me, they have only felled the trunk of the tree of liberty in Saint-Domingue, but it will grow again, because its roots are deep and numerous”. So Chouk Bwa Libète are, in a sense, the roots of liberty. “We chose that name because, via music, we fight for the freedom of our people,” explains Sambaton (Jean-Claude Dorvil) on the telephone from Gonaïves, a key centre of voodoo in Haiti.
Mention voodoo and people straightaway think of Haiti. This kind of music is the Caribbean island’s most important cultural representative, but it is much more than that: “Voodoo is ritual music, a religion that comes from our African ancestors. We are the heirs to the Dahomey of Benin and to Vodun culture.” The Kingdom of Dahomey was an ancient African kingdom located in the south-west of what is now Benin. Many slaves from that region were taken to the French colony of Saint-Domingue, now known as Haiti.

Chouk Bwa Libète is made up of four percussionists, two female dancers, and its leader and composer Sambaton on vocals and on the fer (an iron bar), a sort of bell that announces the different rhythms to call up the spirits. “We have lots of rhythms and a total of nine drums. »
