Gavin Bryars was born in Yorkshire in 1943. His first musical reputation was as a jazz bassist working in the early sixties with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley, forming the famous Joseph Holbrooke Trio. Bryars abandoned improvisation in 1966 and instead worked in the United States with composer John Cage, where his early influences of minimalism and the New York School on his work can be seen.
Bryars has written a considerable number of other works, including four operas, many concertos and a great number of instrumental pieces, many for his own ensemble. He has written several pieces for choreographers, including his hugely successful collaboration with Merce Cunningham,Bipedthat was in the Cunningham Company’s repertoire and performed worldwide on the Cunningham « Legacy Tour », which ended the life of the company in December 2011.
For the concert the line-uo will be: Peyee Chen, soprano; Chris O’Gorman (or John Potter), tenor; Morgan Goff viola; James Woodrow, electric and acoustic guitars; Nick Cooper, cello; Gavin Bryars, double bass.

Joshua Baumgarten & The Irrational Library is a new project crossing the streams of spoken word poetry and get down boogie for your brain rock n roll music.  Based around the spoken word poetry of expat American/born again Haarlemmer Joshua Baumgarten and the musical production of the multi-talent musician/producer Mishal Zeera.  Rounding out the band is the drumming excellence of Lars van der Weiden (Spoon Lifts Moon) and switching between baritone sax and guitar slinging is Tom de Haan (Haarlemtown’s very own Stads Dominee).  JB & The Irrational Library is the party protest band for modern times.

Hailing from Central Sudan and now based in London after fleeing the fundamentalist takeover in that region, the Scorpios are a septet that melds Arabic rhythms and guitar chops (and a kind of swooning cyclical ecstasy) with a raw Eastern funk feel, properly dismantling cultural barriers in pursuit of a unifying rhythmic bliss. Heavy bass, synths, horns and percussions drive through traditional Sudanese forms to create a sound that owes as much to Detroit as it do to Khartoum.

FEN (Far East Network) is a group project made up of musicians from Singapore, Japan, China, and Korea who play improvised music. It was first started on the suggestion of globally renowned musician Otomo Yoshihide. Each member is an artist who works individually on the experimental music scene in his respective country. They have been supporting each other’s activities by organizing concerts in their own countries, and this relationship became the motivation to form FEN. Currently formed of Otomo Yoshihide, Yan Jun, Yuen Chee Wai & Ryu Hankil.

Niccolo Brown GNOD make NOISE; a churning scree of incandescent tumult that feels less like rock ‘n’ roll than an anonymously delivered pummelling to the head and guts in some dark alley late one Saturday night. GNOD’s is a singularly British noise too. Yes, there are vague nods to early Swans but only a band playing in the ruins of what Cameron et al have done to this once green and pleasant land could raise such a conflagration as « Mirror ». Whatever your musical taste, you need this album in your life immediately. No ifs, buts or maybes.

Kasper T. Toeplitz: Composer, electric bass player and musician who has developed his work in the no man’s land between « academic » composition (orchestra, ensembles, opera) and electronic « new music » or « noise music ». Has won several prizes and distinctions ; 1st prize for orchestral composition at the Besançon Festival, 1st prize at the « Opéra autrement / centre Acanthes » competition, Villa Médicis Hors les Murs (New York), grant Leonardo da Vinci (San Francisco) , Villa Kujoyama (Kyoto), DAAD (Berlin). Got numerous commissions from the French Governement, the radio and from electronic studios such as Ircam, GRM , GMEM, CRFMW, EMS.. Works with experimental or unclassifiable musicians such as Zbigniew Karkowski, Tetsuo Furudate, Dror Feiler, Art Zoyd, Eliane Radigue, Phill Niblock, Ulrich Krieger, Stevie Wishart, Z’ev, others…….
Didier Casamitjana Percussionist , mover and composer Percussionist contemporary training , he quickly headed for the experimental music.
It is found as a musician and composer with Wooshing Machine , kasper T.Toeplitz , Myriam Gourfink , Karine Ponties , Art Zoyd , Espace Pasolini..

Pierre Bastien (FR) + Stahlquartett (GER) + installation by Val Macé (B)

10 €

The composer and multi-instrumentalist Pierre Bastien (FR) played first in some collective bands (Operation Rhino, Nu Creative Methods, Effectifs de Profil), and with the Dominique Bagouet Dance Company.  » A composer’s dream : a fail-safe orchestra at one’s fingertips obeying ever so gently to his every command : a timeless sounding orchestra, both futuristic and slightly dada, conjuring ancient traditions in its surprisingly sensuous music. This is, in a nutshell what Pierre Bastien’s « Mecanium » is all about, a daydream of sorts that he has successfully pursued since 1976. The musicians of his orchestra are machines. And the idea behind it is simple, efficient and poetic : to have traditional instruments (Chinese lute, Morrocan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, violin, sanza, etc.) played by a mechanical instrument made of meccano pieces and recycled turntable motors. These hybrid and self-playing sound sculptures perform a series of short pieces, charming and hypnotic.  »

The STAHLQUARTETT (GER) was established in 2001 with musicians from the ‘Steelharmonie’ which was founded in 1999 by the musician and instrument maker, Jan Heinke. It brings together classical and jazz musicians. Their instruments, constructed out of steel by Jan Heinke, are known as Stahlcellos.
The STAHLQUARTETT usually plays acoustically in chamber music performances. As required, the instruments can be amplified and the sounds electronically modified.
The group’s repertoire consists of their own compositions, and also a wide range of works from classical to contemporary.
The unique sounds created by the steel instruments lift these compositions out of their various origins in time and unites them in a common context shaped by the qualities of the instruments.
The musical interests of the members lead to numerous collaborations with other artists.
In these collaborations stylistic and perceptional boundaries are consciously transcended, allowing the development of new forms of musical expression.

+ installation by Val Macé (B)

MURMUR METAL , manipulation of sonic objects.
Murmur Metal is a on-going protean project in continuous progress.
A noise ritual with metal objects, leftover of our civilization, hanging, laying, standing, recognizable, unlikely, found, recycled, industrial, natural, random, chosen…
And then it grows, it swells, it springs, it drags, it scrapes, it
flies away and here it comes, invisible, already there: sound!

A singer singing in 9 languages and her band. The Hungarian-Moroccan artist, Majda Mária Guessous, is a real polyglot singer. The Meshinda explores the parallels in melodic tunes inherently existing in the different musical traditions of the world but especially in Hungarian and Indian folk music but Pakistani, Turkish, Kurd, Moroccan and Gipsy tunes also occur very often.

Thanks for reading.

Mathias Delplanque is an electronic music composer and an improviser. He released around thirty records and plays regurlarly with different artists from various musical backgrounds.
Guillaume Ollendorff produced two album under the name of Tsé and played with different bands. He also plays guitar occasionally with the Hyperion Ensemble and the composers Ana-Maria Avram and Iancu Dumitrescu.

Uniform formed in New York City in late 2013 when old friends Ben Greenberg (Hubble, The Men, Pygymy Shrews) and Michael Berdan (York Factory Complaint, Drunkdriver, Believer/Law) realized they lived on the same street. Their impulsive collaboration quickly yielded Our Blood / Of Sound Mind and Body single. The six tracks that comprise the equally abrasive but more refined Perfect World have been coming together between tours and work ever since.
n Perfect World, that machine is firing on all cylinders. The guitar is run through a cheap ’80s preamp marketed to metal kids. The drum machine is equally no-frills, an Akai XR20 that Greenberg says “most people wouldn’t want to keep around.” These humble components are combined with noisy synth and Berdan’s profound howling to form something much greater. Post-punk, synthpunk, and industrial traditions are borrowed from as needed, but the constraints placed on the process mean the result is unique to Uniform.

In the mid-to-late 1980s, Stephen Lawrie and his band The Telescopes, along with The Jesus and Mary Chain, Loop, and Spacemen 3, were at the vanguard of a new sound, which emphasized feedback-drenched guitars and melodic vocal melodies. Their songs “Kick the Wall,” “7th # Disaster,” “The Perfect Needle,” and debut LP, Taste, helped galvanize the nascent “shoegaze movement.” And bands like My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Slowdive, and Ride—just to name a few—are unimaginable without Lawrie and his fellow Telescopes.
The Telescopes went on to release their classic self-titled LP on Creation Records in 1992—and, in the process, Lawrie reinvented himself as a master of song craft and a musician whose creative restlessness wouldn’t allow him to settle on a single style. The Telescopes, in addition to soaring electric guitars, included acoustic guitars, pianos, delicate percussion, lush strings, and introspective and moody lyrics.

QUJAKU are a Japanese psychedelic band formed in 2013 and based in Shizuoka, Japan. Their music is gothic dark shoegaze, which reminds you of The Horrors, but it also contains emotional expressions that Japan uniquely has, leading you to feel Scandinavian post rock like Sigur Ros. Aesthetic but also destructive, roar but also silenthce, QUJAKU are a rare newcomer that has two opposite elements at the same time. They released their debut album, ‘ZyouK’,from So I Buried Records in October 2015 and a new EP, ‘Keiren’, in April 2016, heading to deeper psychedelia.

An album presenting us with the treasures of the repertoire of French oral tradition (Belgium, France, Quebec).
It’s world music!
The songs have been shaped along with time and on the way, the singers will add their personal grain or grain of voices.

Rotterdam-based artist Janneke van der Putten will perform her newest music project ‘Aurora’ which encompasses hypnotic noise, keyboard, field recordings and dream-songs. Breathtakingly beautiful and eerie stuff which forms a very intense listening experience.

My Own Holiday is a Rock n Roll/Blues Duo from Southern California. The bands broken-down approach is electrifying live, very throwback blues/classic rock and reminiscent of the nineties. Bands like this are formed in garages, basements, and cross-country trips. Drunk or sober music has been written, played, created, and recorded for anyone who wants to listen… Brought to you by My Own Holiday.

Grégoire Tirtiaux is a musician whose musicianship doesn’t stop at style or genre, skilled for improvised music and jazz, he has kept on learning music from other cultures and added other musical point of view to his abilities. He has met and worked with master musicians in gnawa music, indian dhrupad music, romanian and other gipsy musics, arabic music; voodoo and other west-african musics, and many others.
The numerous projects in which he participates as a leader or sideman stretch from solo to big band, mixing written and improvised music. Looking for  unheard sounds and  unexpected music, in the same time modern and permeated with traditions, he plays actual music deeply rooted and speaking with souls.
In his baritone sax solo, Grégoire Tirtiaux mixes various techniques such as circular breathing, percussive playing, diphonic reeding, saxuachi, multiphonic harmonics, double sounds, sax humming, sub baritone, quarter tones, slap, and many other acoustic effects.

Convulsif is a collective and band project originally initiated by the
bass player Loïc Grobéty. The band focuses to an enriched tension between
composition and improvisation in powerful sounds and experiments at the
limits of styles and musical languages. With its special and outstanding
instrumentation – a classic rhythm section and a heavy amplified, treated
violin & bass clarinet – the band goes deep in the sound of the actual
rock scene and mix different tendencies to a new unknown conglomerate:
Doom, Drone, Black Metal and Noise are played with the means of conceptual
improvisation and imposed themes. All colored by a very uncommon

As a child, Toni Cutrone aka Mai Mai Mai followed his parents around Europe and the Near East, ending up in the south of Italy, assimilating different cultures, atmospheres and sonorities of the places he was involuntarily taken to. These sensations and sounds were intense enough to leave indelible traces in his music, but Roman noise omnivore Cutrone own decade-plus experience in the Italian underground has doubtless played a role as well.

All the best.

Booking offers (week 41)

Dear all,

Please find here my offers of the week: Ian Hunter & The Rant Band, Merzuga, Rattle, Basic House.

Don’t hesitate if you want to set up a gig for one of these bands/artists.

Availability: late June 2017
Territory: Belgium

MERZUGA (France)
Availability: From early March 2017 onwards
Territory: Europe

Availability: Between 23rd and 26th November + from mid March 2017 onwards

Availability: From mid March 2017 onwards

Whilst his achievements during his first decade as a recording artist would have been more than enough to ensure his iconic status, Hunter has never been one to coast on past glories. Indeed, in the past dozen years, he’s made a series of riveting albums that stand with his best and most resonant work, while making a decisive return to touring, delivering incendiary live performances that show his fire to be burning as brightly as ever.
He was already a veteran of the London music scene by the time he joined Mott The Hoople in 1969. With Mott, he recorded four iconoclastic albums – “Mott The Hoople”, “Mad Shadows”, “Wildlife” and “Brain Capers” – by the time they hit international stardom with the glam-rock anthem for a generation, the David Bowie penned, “All The Young Dudes”.

« Twilight minimalist Rock  »  » Dark-Ambient « .
A man, a bass, a drum machine, the distant memory of a desert, of a village in the desert, traces of astonishment  facing the mirage that appears in the mineral aridity of the desert … Somewhere in between group Suicide and the Gnaws rituals there is the music of Merzuga , repetitive, dusky and providentially arid.

Rattle are a drumming duo based in Nottingham and comprised of Theresa J Wrigley (Highs) and Katharine Eira Brown (Lows). Both musicians also play drums for two other well respected bands, with Theresa in Fists and Katy in Kogumaza. Rattle play minimalist rhythms that remain both hypnotic and danceable heavily thanks to the delicate vocal melodies which accompany their beats. Their sound recalls This Heat or ESG whilst remaining uniquely their own.

Basic House distils various permutations of electronic music down to their pure source and the result is an eerie and striking ambience full of sonic drama. Matching a bristling use of negative space with clearly defined event horizons, Bishop’s music continues to explore what a post-techno world sounds like when it comes unmoored from its’ defining structure–a regulated beat.

Thank you for your time and reading.

I hope to hear from you bas soon as possible.

All the best.
