GRASSCUT
You can’t get more quintessentially English than Grasscut, and you’d be hard pressed to come across better, more focused sound collages than what you’ll find on Everyone was a Bird.
Composer/producer/ vocalist Andrew Phillips and manager/musician Marcus O’Dair (who wrote last year’s superb biography of Robert Wyatt) fuse themes, including identity, home, familiarity and ancestry, with an impressive if not immersive array of song, ambient textures and layered electronica.
Coming across like a mix of early Pink Floyd, classic Pet Shop Boys, Lemon Jelly, Nick Drake and extracts from the Bodleian Library catalogue, this is beautifully simple music – as much experimental as pop-oriented – with guest vocalists including Irish musicians Adrian Crowley and Seamus Fogarty.
PRAIRIE
Prairieis the solo project of Marc Jacobs. Based in Brussels, hecomposes original soundtracks for Super 8mm films, playswithothermusicians and records hisown music for vinyl.
His first EP, « I’m So In Love I AlmostForgot I Survived A Disaster » released last year, sounded »post-everything: post punk, post rock, post drones, post ambient, post noise fusedinto a hauntingsoundtrackfilledwithguitars, electronicrhythms and effects, film music and conversation snippets » (GonzoCircus magazine).
« Like a Pack of Hounds »—wordstakenfromCormacMcCarthy’snovelBlood Meridian —is the logicalfollow-up, blendinglayers of lo-fihissentangledintohiddenmelodies, loudguitaroutburstswithvoicesappearinglikelostghosts out of a southerngothic western.A restless ride intoimaginaryburnedlandscapeswhereromanticnightmaresmeet white magic to delivertense and distortedsoundscapes made of noise, fieldrecordings and electroacoustic abstractions. « Like a Pack of Hounds » wasreleased in February 2015 on the Berlin based label Shitkatapult and received a greatwelcomefrom the international press.
On stage the band iscomposed by Jacobs on guitar, Grégoire Fray (Thot, The HillsMover) on guitar and electronics, Catherine Graindorge (Nox, Detroit, Hugo Race, Andrea Schröder) on violin and effects. On some occasions, the band isaccompanied by live super 8mm / 16 mm film manipulations by filmmakerKhristineGillard.
The band has recentlyplayed Artefact Festival (Leuven), Netwerk (Aalst), Les Nuits Botanique (Brussels) and will support Germanartist and labelmate Apparat on select dates duringhisnextEuropean tour.
SLY & THE FAMILY DRONE
You know that thing about no rules, yeah? Well, obviously there must be the odd exception to that, because otherwise how do we attain definition? I mean, it cannot simply be a FREE FOR ALL, and we must impose this non-rule loudly, otherwise people will consider us to be foolhardy and fascistic when that moment arises, when someone prods our backs with a sweaty finger and says « That person there is trying to break the rules, look »
UNIFORM
Uniform formed in New York City in late 2013 when old friends Ben
Greenberg (Hubble, The Men, Pygymy Shrews) and Michael Berdan (York
Factory Complaint, Drunkdriver, Believer/Law) realized they lived on
the same street.
Their impulsive collaboration quickly yielded Our Blood / Of Sound
Mind and Body single. The six tracks that comprise the equally
abrasive but more refined Perfect World have been coming together
between tours and work ever since.
DWELLING & DRUSS
Dwellings & Druss are Chris Haslam & Paddy Shine, founding members of experimental cosmonauts GNOD. The duo focus primarily on stripped down minimal tech-noise workouts using analogue & digital electronics.
This is hypnotic motorik sorcery at its finest. Likewise, the slow yield pacing, restraint and intent of the flipside is genius, coming off like Ike Yard meets Cluster in Mark Ernestus’ studio for nigh on 20 minutes of brittle, pointillist body rhythm and ether noise dissipated and reforming with syzygystic logic
REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER
Strong in their respective experiences, the band merges its diverse
inuences to o-er a unique, completed and personal style.
Combining Sludge’s heaviness, Black Metal’s darkness, Hardcore’s
groove but also Post Rock’s atmospheres, RLHT makes of its work
an intense music lled with impact. It is also an introspective work
tailored for the musical scene. Each performance brings the crowd
to the edge of asphyxiation; the end of each show is an explosion of
feelings, nally allowing the audience to take their breath once again.
A musical experience that will not leave the spectator unchanged.
Even if the hint to the lmmaker J. Audiard isn’t very far, there is no
link with the movie of the same title. Nevertheless, RLHT aims to be
a model in perfect harmony with its own music.
Thanks for reading.
Please get back to me if you are interested in booking a date for one of these artists.
All the best.
