GLETSCHERMUSIK
“Gletschermusik” (Glacier Music) uses the sounds and images of Central Asia’s melting glaciers as source material and inspiration.
Berlin’s Robert Lippok & Kyrgyz musician Askat Jetigen were invited to create an audio-visual performance and a series of concerts.
The project promotes the exchange between science and the arts, creating awareness of the human-induced deterioration of our pristine environment and was instigated by the Goethe-Institutes in Tashkent and Almaty.
The music Robert and Askat created together is magical and thematically relevant to the theme of melting glaciers, a fascinating blend of ancient Kyrgyz tradition and new musical ideas.
KAYNAK PIPERS BAND
Kaynak Pipers Band is a kaba gaida (Bulgarian bagpipes) ensemble performing traditional folklore from the Rhodope mountain, Bulgaria. It is formed to continue the traditions of authentic kaba gaida performance and help people from all the world get closer to kaba gaida music, traditions and folklore. It is part of the enclosing project KabaGaida.Com – platform for online training, workshops and concerts around the world.
The word « kaynak » means « source » and is used to name a kaba gaida performer’s specific tunes/instrumentals, often demonstrating his performing skills. Usually when a piper is playing his « kaynak » the music that he plays come straight from his soul.
TWO PIN DIN
Two Pin Din is a duo of two electric guitars that has existed for over ten years. It is Wilf Plum (ex-Dog Faced Hermans, currently in Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp) and Andy Kerr (ex-Nomeansno guitarist/singer).
Andy and Wilf had already been friends for many years when they met up in a local whisky bar in Amsterdam sometime in the early 2000’s and came up with the idea of creating a duo with just vocals and two guitars. Two electric guitars. No bass or drums. Rhythmic songs without a rhythm section. A few days and two wee little guitar amplifiers later, they were off!
BEIBEI WANG
Beibei Wang is a virtuoso percussionist who has been meteoric rising in the classical music world. She is an international soloist with both Chinese and British musical education background, received double Master Degrees at Central Conservatory of Music (China) and Royal Academy of Music (UK). Her debut recital live DVD was released in 2011. Beibei was selected in the top fifty Chinese musicians recommended list in the “Sound of East” project by China Ministry of Culture in 2013. Recently, she was awarded Exceptional Talent by Art Council England.
FULL BLAST
Peter Broetzmann (Germany, reeds) – the living legend of the European new jazz.
He has exemplified European improvised music for over 40 years and participated in countless international collaborations.
A founder of European Free Jazz movement, his work includes collaborations and recordings with Last Exit (with Bill Laswell, Sonny Sharrock and Ronald Shannon Jackson), Evan Parker, Misha Mengelberg, and Borah Bergman. Recent projects include Die Like a Dog (with William Parker, Hamid Drake and Toshinori Kondo), his homage to Albert Ayler, the Chicago-based Broetzmann Tentet and many more.
His first album Machine Gun released in 1968 still represents the reference for the musicians and critics. Considering his 40-years-career and more than 100 albums, but also many current projects, Broetzmann is still one of the most influential figures of the new music.
Wertmueller and Pliakas worked together on various occasions (touring together in various bands on festivals all over Europe e.g.
SKIF-Festival St.Petersburg/Russia, Kaunas Jazzfestival/Lithuania, RingRing Festival Belgrade/Serbia, Nozart Festival Cologne/Germany, Xperipheria Budapest/Hungary, Long Arms Festival Moscow/Russia, Cross-linX festival Enschede and Utrecht/Netherlands, Festival Victoriaville/Canada, Sound Forest Riga, Clubtransmediale Berlin, Ultraschall Berlin, MaerzMusik Berlin, etc. together with Peter Broetzmann, Caspar Broetzmann, Stephan Wittwer, John Cale, Holger Csukay, Marian Gold, Mouse on Mars, Jaki Liebezeit, KK.Null, Olaf Rupp, IVES #1, and others cooperation with Pliakas’ avant trio STEAMBOAT SWITZERLAND). Both of them toured world wide with their various bands (MW: William Parker Trio, Alboth!, 16-17, W2 MP: steamboat switzerland, sludge 2000 etc.).
ALVIN CURRAN + MASSIMO PUPILLO
Curran’s music-making embraces all the contradictions (composed/improvised, tonal/atonal, maximal/minimal…) in a serene dialectical encounter. His more than 200 works feature taped/sampled natural sounds, piano, synthesizers, computers, violin, percussion, shofar, ship horns, accordion and chorus. Whether in the intimate form of his well-known solo performances, or pure chamber music, experimental radio works or large-scale site-specific sound environments and installations, all forge a very personal language from all the languages through dedicated research and recombinant invention.
Massimo Pupillo is a bass player and composer originally from Rome Italy. He is mostly known for his work with the band Zu. For over fifteen years, his modus operandi of straddling and abusing musical genres has resulted in over 15 album releases across labels such as Ipecac, Atavistic, Daymare Recordings and Headz (Japan). John Zorn described Zu as « a powerful and expressive music that totally blows away what most bands do these days ».
Thanks for reading.
All the best.
