KHALAB (Italy)https://djkhalab.bandcamp.com/Availability: On request Territories: The Netherlands + BelgiumAnd then there is Raffaele Costantino, one of Italy’s most renowned radio hosts. He also DJs and produces under the moniker DJ Khalab, and after three years of silence since his first and only album made in collaboration with Malian talking drum master Baba Sissoko, on July 20th he quietly dropped one of the most powerful records of the year – Black Noise 2084. Out for the London label On The Corner Records, his latest work is a visionary statement, a synesthetic work that expresses much more than just the music it contains. Starting from the title track « Black Noise », the sharp words of Tenesha The Wordsmith harshly scan the rhythm of the music and intertwine with the layered polyrhythmic composition into a gloomy, tenacious trance. « We are deaf to the sounds that define us »; this track is a manifesto, and every manifesto is born out of the necessity to protest against a status quo – in this case, opposing the cliché around what black culture, black music and heritage are expected to be.MIA ZABELKA (Austria) + GLENN HALL (Canada)https://miazabelka.bandcamp.com/album/the-quantum-violinAvailability: 2022 Territories: Europe + UKAtomized, interpolated, reconfigured, mosaiced, cut up, transported to the sonic territories of quantum interactions, the musical collaboration of Austrian violinist and Canadian electroacoustic improviser Glen Hall bends the clock of real time music. It enters a realm of vibrational ‘implants’, phase vocoded reversals, spatialized architectures, and unforeseen happenstances. The Quantum Violin is not a collection of academic violin exercises, it is a virtuoso escape hatch out of our imaginations’ ‘box’. Mia Zabelka’s violin exists as the centre of a quantum sound galaxy.YOKEL (UK)https://avonterrorcorps.bandcamp.com/album/smell-of-deerAvailability: 2022 Territory: EuropeWhether it’s as part of Avon Terror Corps, running his label Plaque, his monthly slot on NOODS radio or hosting the club night, Slack Alice, alongside Max Kelan, Anina, & Nadoone – it’s not unreasonable to say Yokel has been operating in the Bristol underground for a fair few moons. His illbient meets industrial and EBM tinged sound best showcased on last year’s ‘Smell Of Deer’ EP (ATC008) and on collaborations with friends such as Dali de Saint Paul and Franco Franco, amongst others. With ATC he’s played around Europe and the UK, including at Berlin Atonal and in recent months has supported the likes of Pink Siifu, Ben Vince and Mick Harris. During 2021, he’s manned production duties for GROVE, worked with LA via Jamaica’s Duppy Gun and has been on remix duties for EBU & Jackson Veil Panther and Elder Island. His live show encapsulates the scalding nucleus of his sound, moving between twisted atmospherics, rolling weirdo electronics, smoked-out sonics and ruff hip hop/dancehall infusions – a trip known to drag a string of friends and collaborators along for the ride. |
