ALUK TODOLO
Aluk Todolo is an instrumental power trio performing Occult Rock since 2004. Their music is a methodical exploration of the powers of musical trance. Part occult black metal fiend and part snide kraut menace, the band conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. Aluk Todolo reduces psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, in which dry, spare percussion grievously mines the scrapes, shrieks and shimmer of mutated guitar and bass. The band’s sound is monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming: a dangerous, noxious coil of all things black. The name Aluk Todolo was brought back from a mountainous region of South Sulawesi in Indonesia, it’s an ancient religiston with animist beliefs meaning «the Way of the Ancestors».

BLURT
Band leader Ted Milton’s freakishly honking saxophone whirls spectacularly; calling to mind the shrinking tones conjured by John Zorn on some of his most challenging work. Allied to a sliding bass figure that seems to have the consistency of gooey rubber and a relentlessly funky drum pattern is Milton’s low in the mix poetry. Growled in a distinctly menacing manner that’s somewhere between unhinged royal correspondent and a sociopathic surgeon Once More glories in a chaotic, disturbing atmosphere.

CHRIS ABRAHAMS
Abrahams is best known as the stalwart behind the piano with much-acclaimed experimental trio The Necks, and with their star in the ascendant following the success of last year’s Vertigo, putting out a solo album at this stage feels like excellent timing on Abrahams’ part, not for opportunistic or cynical reasons but because it emphasises his work as an individual both in and outside of The Necks. On the evidence of Fluid to the Influence, it also allows him to unwind and give voice to the more playful and experimental aspects of his inspiration.

OKKULTOKRATI
OKKULTOKRATI makes it their business to tear apart the rock ‘n’ roll guidebook and mash it in to vicious combat music for fans of punk, d-beat, black metal and generally anyone with a penchant for unsavory anthems delivered with inimitable attitude. They have earned a ferocious reputation for siphoning elements of disparate genres in to their toxic, distorted brew, a trait that can be observed across the whole of the Black Hole Crew collective encompassing Haust, Dark Times, Blood Suckers, Drugged SS, and others. Once the sheer slamming force of their tunes has sunk in, the iconoclastic quintet has a tendency to pull the rug from under the whole contraption, sending their tracks tumbling in to experimental and industrial forays that further their capacity to ensnare the listener in their bear trap.

EGYPTRIXX
Egyptrixx is celestial club music; jeep music for a Saturn desert. There is an exhilarating right-but-wrong tension in all the tracks – a shifting balance between melodic and dissonant, rapturous and antisocial. His releases challenge the status quo and impress with a unique style informed by elements of techno, house, heavy metal, pop and drone music.

JANNEKE VAB DER PUTTEN (AURORA)
Janneke van der Putten will play her project Aurora, which encompasses hypnotic noise, keyboard, field recordings and dream-songs, also described as « Breathtakingly beautiful and eerie stuff which forms a very intense listening experience. ». She forms the duo ‘Invisible Architecture’ with Chrs Galarreta, for which they published a 12″ in 2014, presenting at institutions as Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Lima, and at underground venues as Villa K, The Hague. She is part of collective Aloardi (Peru), who run an artist-in-residency and platform for experimental music and media arts since 1998. The Rotterdam-based artist and singer exhibited with solo show ‘All Begins With A’ at TENT in 2015, and curated the Aloardi Exchange Programme 2016 in collaboration with amongst others WORM. Van der Putten is currently working on a commission by CBK Rotterdam (Centre for Visual Arts Rotterdam), developing an audiovisual performance with recorded material from her archive and using her voice as main instrument.

SAJJRA
Sajjra is Chrs Galarreta’s song project with guitar, effects, voice, sampler, and sequences. It is described as harsh-pop, with industrial influences mixed with the atmosphere of the slow and heavy Andean processions. In 2015 it was #1 in the ranking of the Peruvian alternative media.

RUBY THE HATCHET
Born in a New Jersey basement, the five-piece boasts a riff-centered, hard hitting rock sound that has infected the Philadelphia music scene with a unique blend of psychedelic undertones, wailing vocal melodies and raw-power energy.
RUBY THE HATCHET‘s psychedelia-laced power-rock conjures visions of midnight councils and sinister sorcery, appropriating a storm of distorted axe-wielding as a vehicle of enchantment, with seductive songstress Jillian Taylor overlaying a series of bewitching spellbound poetics.

THE WELL
Austin-based power trio The Well redefine heavy rock by merging massive riffs with sophisticated melodies. Their progressive sound stems from a nostalgic desire to blend different musical styles as diversified as Joy Division to Blue Cheer. The group blossomed when guitarist/vocalist Ian Graham was fired from his previous band. Determined to redirect his musical focus, Graham hooked up with bassist Lisa Alley and the two began picking out riffs in their east-side garage. Rounding out their sound, they stole drummer Jason Sullivan from Graham’s old band in a tale of vengeance and karma. His solid groove and reckless tribal beat gave the three-piece their ideal primal attack.
Due to their psychedelic doom edge, The Well reap comparisons to Black Sabbath, Sleep, Electric Wizard and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats.

AYUB OGADA

Today Ayub Ogada is regarded as one of the greatest Kenyan artists of

all time. He was born in 1956 in Mombassa as Job Seda, a descendant of

the proud Luo people of western Kenya. At six, his parents took him to

Chicago, where his father studied medicine. Ayub recalls meeting

Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), and experiencing the aftermath of

American segregation, even as his parents toured college campuses

performing Luo music at a time when the term ‘world music’ was unkown in

commercial circles.

ROYAL TRUX

ROYAL TRUX from Washington DC, like LOOP are indebted to classic garage

and psych, at least instrumentally. Vocally, Jennifer Herrema’s voice is

akin to Betty Davis which acts as counterpoint to Neil Michael Hagerty’s

which lies somewhere between Beefheart and Johnny Thunders.

LIBEREZ

Based in main orchestrator John Hannon’s remote studio No Recordings in

Rayleigh, England, Liberez have expanded their palette from previous

outings on Alter to produce a perfectly engineered machine that consumes

the beholder. A tense, gut-wrenching listen wrought with carefully

considered space, the range of techniques and the depth of atmosphere is

staggering. All Tense Now Lax never settles on a simple depiction of

dread, foreboding or anxiety but layers textures upon rhythms to produce

towering minarets of conflicting emotion

RADIAN

Vienna is the home of Radian, Martin Brandlmayr (drums, electronics),

John Norman (bass), and Martin Siewert (guitars, electronics), who have

been influenced by and shaped the city’s vivid scene of electronica in

the early 2000s. Vienna is currently a wide open creative home to many

new music composers.

The juxtaposition of extremes (on/off) is present in Radian’s work: the

contrast between light and darkness; and in musical terms, sound and

silence and brightness/darkness of timbre.

PEKKO KAPPI

I, Pekko, am a player of Jouhikko – the ancient Finnish-Karelian bowed

lyre. My music has been described like this: « In his hands the rough

sound of weaved horsehair strings are swaying between the foul and

lovely – dirty and pure. The old songs of unwritten tradition, timeless

and dark stories mediates in his mouth.

NADJA

Nadja is a duo of Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff making music that

encompasses experimental/drone, ambient, shoegazer, & doom metal.

Regards.

RADIAN
Vienna is the home of Radian, Martin Brandlmayr (drums, electronics), John Norman (bass), and Martin Siewert (guitars, electronics), who have been influenced by and shaped the city’s vivid scene of electronica in the early 2000s. COMMON EIDER KING EIDER
COMMON EIDER KING EIDER is an evolving art and music collaboration between Rob Fisk (Badgerlore, ex-Deerhoof, and Six Organs of Admittance/Hexadic collaborator), Vicky Fong, Andee Connors (A Minor Forest), Andrew Weathers and Blaine Todd. A potent mix of blackened ambience, drone and silence incorporating viola, vast chorale arrangements, and field recordings. Labels representing CEKE since their inception in 2007 include Pesanta Urfolk, Black Horizons, Root Strata, Sol y Nieve, and their own imprint Caribou People. Terrifying, beautiful, spare, the sound of light nullified- and at the same time a celebration of the power and beauty of the sun.
