AYUB OGADA
Today Ayub Ogada is regarded as one of the greatest Kenyan artists of
all time. He was born in 1956 in Mombassa as Job Seda, a descendant of
the proud Luo people of western Kenya. At six, his parents took him to
Chicago, where his father studied medicine. Ayub recalls meeting
Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), and experiencing the aftermath of
American segregation, even as his parents toured college campuses
performing Luo music at a time when the term ‘world music’ was unkown in
commercial circles.
ROYAL TRUX
ROYAL TRUX from Washington DC, like LOOP are indebted to classic garage
and psych, at least instrumentally. Vocally, Jennifer Herrema’s voice is
akin to Betty Davis which acts as counterpoint to Neil Michael Hagerty’s
which lies somewhere between Beefheart and Johnny Thunders.
LIBEREZ
Based in main orchestrator John Hannon’s remote studio No Recordings in
Rayleigh, England, Liberez have expanded their palette from previous
outings on Alter to produce a perfectly engineered machine that consumes
the beholder. A tense, gut-wrenching listen wrought with carefully
considered space, the range of techniques and the depth of atmosphere is
staggering. All Tense Now Lax never settles on a simple depiction of
dread, foreboding or anxiety but layers textures upon rhythms to produce
towering minarets of conflicting emotion
RADIAN
Vienna is the home of Radian, Martin Brandlmayr (drums, electronics),
John Norman (bass), and Martin Siewert (guitars, electronics), who have
been influenced by and shaped the city’s vivid scene of electronica in
the early 2000s. Vienna is currently a wide open creative home to many
new music composers.
The juxtaposition of extremes (on/off) is present in Radian’s work: the
contrast between light and darkness; and in musical terms, sound and
silence and brightness/darkness of timbre.
PEKKO KAPPI
I, Pekko, am a player of Jouhikko – the ancient Finnish-Karelian bowed
lyre. My music has been described like this: « In his hands the rough
sound of weaved horsehair strings are swaying between the foul and
lovely – dirty and pure. The old songs of unwritten tradition, timeless
and dark stories mediates in his mouth.
NADJA
Nadja is a duo of Aidan Baker & Leah Buckareff making music that
encompasses experimental/drone, ambient, shoegazer, & doom metal.
Regards.
