NICOLA CRUZ
Nicola Cruz’s music invokes the landscapes and rituals of his homeland,
Ecuador, a country that is home both to the Andes mountains and the
Amazon jungle. His music is an exploration of ancient mythologies and
folkloric traditions in a modern setting. Nicola was born in Limoges,
France, to Ecuadorian parents. His upbringing was surrounded by a rich
musical education in both indigenous traditions and Western theories and
from a young age he took to percussion.
From this musical connection between past and present, traditional and
modern, an ongoing South American movement has arisen, exploring the
local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies through a carefully crafted
analogue sound.

JIM GHEDI
Jim Ghedi is a 6 & 12 string Guitarist based in Sheffield, England.
Over the past year touring predominantly throughout the UK & Europe, releasing his debut album with Cambrian Records in 2015.
His work is rapidly expanding into recording & performing soundtracks for film and theatre performance as well as providing live music for Art exhibitions.
Having spent time travelling around Northern Europe, experimenting with various genre’s of music he has now exploring finger-style instrumental Guitar composition, with a wide repertoire of influences ranging from American Primitive, Spanish and classical music of Europe and Traditional British Folk/
Having an impressive history of both collaboration and supported work for such acts as James Blackshaw, Richard Dawson, Dead Rat Orchestra, Cam Deas, C Joynes, Stephanie Hladowski, Alasdair Roberts, Alex nelson’s Death Shanties, The Big eyes family players and Trembling bells. This year also gaining experience scoring music for Films, Theatre shows and performing for a BFI film tour within the UK he is also focusing on further work within this area

CHICKS ON SPEED
Globetrotting performance, art, music, fashion and new-media provocateurs, Chicks on Speed (Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan) are multidisciplinary workers in the field of culture. Their songs lie at the cutting edges of activism and media-pop-art, where the digital world embraces the handmade, rough and spontaneous, interlacing the programmed, the multilayered and delicious data scapes, where sloganeering leads us through to time rippling via a stop in their self-made utopia and the strobe light stays on. The writer Douglas Coupland describes them as living in a post-Koonsian world with a curated 21st-century lifestyle, where everything is art and everyone can be an artist and even non-art is art by default: a readymade!

NEGATIVLAND
Since 1980, the 4 or 5 or 6 Floptops known as Negativland, a performance and recording group based in the San Francisco Bay Area, have been creating records, CDs, video, fine art, books, radio and live performance using appropriated sounds, images, objects, and text. Mixing original materials and original music with things taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them, Negativland re-arranges these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984), Negativland have been sued twice for copyright infringement.
Over the years Negativland’s “illegal” collage and appropriation-based audio and visual works have touched on many things – pranks, media hoaxes, advertising, media literacy, religion, the evolving art of collage, the bizarre banality of suburban existence, creative anti-corporate activism in a media-saturated and multi-national world, file sharing, intellectual property issues, wacky surrealism, evolving notions of art and ownership and law in a digital age, and artistic and humorous observations of mass media and mass culture.

FATHER MURPHY
Father Murphy is the sound of the Catholic sense of Guilt.
A downward spiral aiming at the bottom of the hollow, and then digging even deeper.
Father Murphy over the years became one of the most mysterious and enigmatic musical entities coming out of Italy, part of that community that Simon Reynolds and Julian Cope started to call the new “Italian Occult Psychedelia”.

MUSCLE AND MARROW
Muscle and Marrow formed in 2013 is Kira Clark (guitar, voice) and Keith McGraw (drums, samples). Their sound is surprisingly full, with either lush and drone like guitars or drastically fuzzed, as well as heavy drums. The songs, however, are powered by Clark’s voice, soaringly operatic and high at times, while shaking and guttural at others.

AKARI MOCHIZUKI +  HIBIKI ICHIKAWA
Hibiki Ichikawa is the only professional player of tsugaru shamisen; a traditional 3-stringed instrument played using a large pick called a bachi. In recognition of his great skill, he has been qualified to perform under a « Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa », which is granted only to the most proficient artists. Hibiki frequently performs at festivals and formal occasions, including the Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar Square, and at the Japanese Emperor’s birthday celebrations at the Japanese Embassy, and has also participated in a theatre production at the Edinburgh Festival.
Akari is from Iwakuni in Yamaguchi prefecture. When she was 3 years old, she started singing enka (a variety of traditional Japanese music which often takes the form of sentimental ballads) thanks to the influence of her father, who was a great fan of the genre. Akari studied drama in Cambridge and modern music in London, and started working as a professional singer in 2009. She has performed as an enka and minyo (Japanese folk music) singer for numerous occasions, including WOMAD 2010, Hyper Japan and Japan Matsuri.

LIBEREZ
Based in main orchestrator John Hannon’s remote studio No Recordings in Rayleigh, England, Liberez have expanded their palette from previous outings on Alter to produce a perfectly engineered machine that consumes the beholder. A tense, gut-wrenching listen wrought with carefully considered space, the range of techniques and the depth of atmosphere is staggering. All Tense Now Lax never settles on a simple depiction of dread, foreboding or anxiety but layers textures.

Tank you for reading.

Regards.

YOSHIO MACHIDA and MAIKO DATE
« Sound  is  Body,  Body  is  Sound »  is  an  improvised performance  by  2  Japanese  artists  Yoshio  Machida  (music)  and  Maiko Date  (dance).  Before  performing, each  audience  chooses  one  card  from  some  cards  that Maiko  Date  has  in  her  hands.Different  short  poetry  is written  in  each  card.  Each  audience  will  experience  the same  performance  with  difffent  « theme ».  The  word might be related to your life, trouble and solution, what you  want  to  see,  etc.  Like  tarot  reading, audience  tries  to  think  the  relation  between  the  word(s)  and  the performance. Sound is Body, Body is Sound.

STICK IN THE WHEEL
Stick in the Wheel are no ordinary folk band. Their highly anticipated debut album « From Here » is made of aggressive and intentionally raw recordings, cobbled together in Essex warehouses and East London kitchens. The tales of everyday life feature carboot swindlers, lorry drivers and London rioters sitting seamlessly beside traditional songs of prisons, hammer-wielding blacksmiths and 18th century madhouses.
« We see this music as part of our culture and we’re not pretending to be chimney sweeps or 17th century dandies. »
The band is spearheaded by Nicola Kearey’s fierce uncompromising vocal delivery, and underpinned by sparse taut arrangements. ‘From Here’ follows a handful of acclaimed EPs and Static Caravan 7″, appearances on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour, sessions on BBC6Music and Radio X, plus four BBC Folk Award 2015/2016 nominations. It was awarded the fRoots Magazine Critics Poll Album of the Year 2015.
« This is our culture, our tradition. »
« Stick In The Wheel are ripping apart the preconceptions surrounding folk music » Clashmusic
« Mixing traditional songs with their own, the critically lauded newcomers blended storytelling with sophisticated harmonies. A great live band » The Guardian

AMP STUDIO
Amp Studio is the solo project from Richard Amp, founding member of AMP, the electronic
‘space rock’ shoegaze group that came out of Bristol and London in the early 1990’s.
Alongside fellow sonic pioneers Flying Saucer Attack and Third Eye Foundation.
Richard started Amp Studio (originally monikered as A.M.P. Studio) from the need to create
a counterpoint to his work inside Amp, as an experimentation vehicle for ideas, and a
home generally for his creative output that did not fit within the Amp cannon.
Amp Studio has released 4 albums and a smattering of singles/ep’s since 1997
The new album ‘Uncertainty Principles’ comes after a 16 year hiatus in releases.
Record Collector Magazine says it: “Ambient music turned up to 11

DIAL
Dial is the experimental noise rock band of Jacqui Ham (Ut) on guitar and vocals, Rob Smith on guitar and drum machine and Dom Weeks (Furious Pig, Het) on synth and bass. Dial construct songs using the textures of guitars and machines at the intersection of noise, melody and dissonance.

PEKKO KAPPI
I, Pekko, am a player of Jouhikko – the ancient Finnish-Karelian bowed lyre. My music has been described like this: « In his hands the rough sound of weaved horsehair strings are swaying between the foul and lovely – dirty and pure. The old songs of unwritten tradition, timeless and dark stories mediates in his mouth. »

Thanks for reading.

Please get back to me if you want to set up a gig for one of these musicians/bands.

All the best.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

PHILL NIBLOCK

Phill Niblock makes thick, loud drones of music, filled with microtones of instrumental timbres which generate many other tones in the performance space. Simultaneously, he presents films / videos which look at the movement of people working, or computer driven black and white abstract images floating through time.

Phill Niblock is an intermedia artist using music, film, photography, video and computers. He makes thick, loud drones of music, filled with microtones of instrumental timbres which generate many other tones in the performance space. Simultaneously, he presents films / videos which look at the movement of people working, or computer driven black and white abstract images floating through time. He was born in Indiana in 1933.

DEREK M. POTEAT

Dark sounds emanate from places we do not want to think about or places we do not want to visit. Bringing us face to face with our fears and with the darkness around us, frequencies envelope, surround, and bathe.

What was dark and ugly becomes beauty and light – something more to live for than what our masters taught us. We are free when we choose to be.

JONAS KOCHER, accordion

ILAN MANOUACH, soprano saxophone

DIMITRIS PAPAGEORGIOU, violin

The three musicians met for the first time in December 2013 in Athens, Greece. Their musical backgrounds, as a whole, demonstrates a hybrid of origins, ranging from classical music, to jazz and traditional music. It is from within these different musical landscapes that their project drives its unique and authentic personality, never falling in the easiness of crossover music, but al

LEO WELCH

Meet Leo “Bud” Welch, the last of the Mississippi Delta blues guitarists.

Until two years ago, Bud was known only to his neighbors in Bruce, Mississippi, a logging and sawmill town of about 2,000. Now, more people than ever will hear this 83-year-old guitarist when he releases his first album, I Don’t Prefer No Blues.

Bud was born in 1932 and began playing guitar at the age of 13. He made his living working in the logging industry and on the farm, but he never quit playing guitar.

His audience consisted of family, friends and churches. And in fact it was through the church that he found the name of his album. When he told his preacher he was cutting an album of authentic Delta blues music, the man replied, “I don’t prefer no blues.”

MATT WAND

Matt Wand from Salford, UK, became known to a wider public especially with Stock, Hausen & Walkman, frequent collaboration with Tony Oxley (documented on Incus, The Tony Oxler Quartet, The Tony Oxler Orchestra on Soul Note). Had recently been commissioned by WDR sound collages extracted from WDR recordings of contemporary classical works (Schnitt-Haubenstock, composition & live performance). Individual compositions/contributions also appeared on compilations on various labels. Has received numerous commissions for installations and exhibitions in the UK and abroad.

Besides live performances, radio work, installations he has written film scripts for short films and animations (one winning the Goldcrest Award for best short in 1988) and shown many small gauge movies in the UK and abroad. He also runs the independent artistic recording label Hot Air and designs the visuals and packaging for the many vinyl and CD items released so far.

VON CALHAU!

A true gem from the Portugese underground. Sparse electronics blended with mystic vocalism.

Deep in the Portugese underground Calhau! is building an absurd universe in which nightmares, Catholic mysticism and surrealist spirituality play the lead role. Performance, movie and music are contributing to one melancholic and cruel whole. Their music is rooted deeply in a Roman mysticism, using the dark hand of alchemy to beseech the insane 21st century. Calhau! sounds as an updated verion of Ghédalia Tazartes, blending tape collages and sparse electronics not unlike the PAN back catalogue. Foremost, Calhau! are their own isle, at the point where the Old Europe disappears in the sea.

QUASI UNA FANTASIA

One opera singer teams with one experimental musician!

La Diva Christina Van Peteghem on voices and Pierre-Jean Vranken (see

ODG043) everywhere.

They are Quasi Una Fantasia!

Noise, classical guitars, exquisite melodic songs, minimalism, neoclassical, avant-garde are the medium and the message.

There is no need of more explanation, it’s Quasi everything!

Just listen and enjoy!

Thanks for reading.

I hope to hear from you asap.

Regards.

Booking offers (week 18)

Dear all,

Please find here my offers of the week: Girlie, Thomas Olbrechts and Zohastre

GIRLIE (Germany)
Streaming : https://spaetipalace.bandcamp.com/album/sp007-girlie

Availability: September 8, 9, 10th

Availability: After the Summertime. On request.
Territory: Europe

ZOHASTRE (France)
https://soundcloud.com/zohastre
Availability: 14th June
Territory: Belgium

THOMAS OLBRECHTS
Alto saxophonist & instant composer Thomas Olbrechts developed a strong individual musical discourse that plays off rigid saxophone techniques and composition systems against each other, constantly trying to find the most perfect balance between composition and improvisation, between preconceived structures and the lucidity of the moment which in his opinion can only be fully attained through an open-structured and attitude towards music.

GIRLIE
Girlie might sound like a grumpy record store owner showing his bkindness after a short while. They allow songs to morph from post popxyz punk to a sprawling guitar mess back to tunefull conclusion. Girlie refuse to adhere to one specific genre, mixing elements of punk and indie rock with an infectious energy evident in their live show. Guitar, bass, drums and vocals is all it needs.

ZOHASTRE
Somewhere between banging your head against a brick wall and holding your breath under water . A mess of genres covering noise, drone, sludge, post-hardcore, atmospheric metal, freak folk, ambient, experimental and all that other good stuff.

I hope to hear from you soon if you want to set up a gig for one of these bands/musicians.

All the best.
