NICOLA CRUZ
Nicola Cruz’s music invokes the landscapes and rituals of his homeland,
Ecuador, a country that is home both to the Andes mountains and the
Amazon jungle. His music is an exploration of ancient mythologies and
folkloric traditions in a modern setting. Nicola was born in Limoges,
France, to Ecuadorian parents. His upbringing was surrounded by a rich
musical education in both indigenous traditions and Western theories and
from a young age he took to percussion.
From this musical connection between past and present, traditional and
modern, an ongoing South American movement has arisen, exploring the
local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies through a carefully crafted
analogue sound.

CHICKS ON SPEED
Globetrotting performance, art, music, fashion and new-media provocateurs, Chicks on Speed (Alex Murray-Leslie and Melissa Logan) are multidisciplinary workers in the field of culture. Their songs lie at the cutting edges of activism and media-pop-art, where the digital world embraces the handmade, rough and spontaneous, interlacing the programmed, the multilayered and delicious data scapes, where sloganeering leads us through to time rippling via a stop in their self-made utopia and the strobe light stays on. The writer Douglas Coupland describes them as living in a post-Koonsian world with a curated 21st-century lifestyle, where everything is art and everyone can be an artist and even non-art is art by default: a readymade!
NEGATIVLAND
Since 1980, the 4 or 5 or 6 Floptops known as Negativland, a performance and recording group based in the San Francisco Bay Area, have been creating records, CDs, video, fine art, books, radio and live performance using appropriated sounds, images, objects, and text. Mixing original materials and original music with things taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them, Negativland re-arranges these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984), Negativland have been sued twice for copyright infringement.
Over the years Negativland’s “illegal” collage and appropriation-based audio and visual works have touched on many things – pranks, media hoaxes, advertising, media literacy, religion, the evolving art of collage, the bizarre banality of suburban existence, creative anti-corporate activism in a media-saturated and multi-national world, file sharing, intellectual property issues, wacky surrealism, evolving notions of art and ownership and law in a digital age, and artistic and humorous observations of mass media and mass culture.
FATHER MURPHY
Father Murphy is the sound of the Catholic sense of Guilt.
A downward spiral aiming at the bottom of the hollow, and then digging even deeper.
Father Murphy over the years became one of the most mysterious and enigmatic musical entities coming out of Italy, part of that community that Simon Reynolds and Julian Cope started to call the new “Italian Occult Psychedelia”.
MUSCLE AND MARROW
Muscle and Marrow formed in 2013 is Kira Clark (guitar, voice) and Keith McGraw (drums, samples). Their sound is surprisingly full, with either lush and drone like guitars or drastically fuzzed, as well as heavy drums. The songs, however, are powered by Clark’s voice, soaringly operatic and high at times, while shaking and guttural at others.
AKARI MOCHIZUKI + HIBIKI ICHIKAWA
Hibiki Ichikawa is the only professional player of tsugaru shamisen; a traditional 3-stringed instrument played using a large pick called a bachi. In recognition of his great skill, he has been qualified to perform under a « Tier 1 Exceptional Talent Visa », which is granted only to the most proficient artists. Hibiki frequently performs at festivals and formal occasions, including the Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar Square, and at the Japanese Emperor’s birthday celebrations at the Japanese Embassy, and has also participated in a theatre production at the Edinburgh Festival.
Akari is from Iwakuni in Yamaguchi prefecture. When she was 3 years old, she started singing enka (a variety of traditional Japanese music which often takes the form of sentimental ballads) thanks to the influence of her father, who was a great fan of the genre. Akari studied drama in Cambridge and modern music in London, and started working as a professional singer in 2009. She has performed as an enka and minyo (Japanese folk music) singer for numerous occasions, including WOMAD 2010, Hyper Japan and Japan Matsuri.
LIBEREZ
Based in main orchestrator John Hannon’s remote studio No Recordings in Rayleigh, England, Liberez have expanded their palette from previous outings on Alter to produce a perfectly engineered machine that consumes the beholder. A tense, gut-wrenching listen wrought with carefully considered space, the range of techniques and the depth of atmosphere is staggering. All Tense Now Lax never settles on a simple depiction of dread, foreboding or anxiety but layers textures.
Tank you for reading.
Regards.
