PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS

English rock outfit Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (or « PIGSx7 » for short) combine acid rock, psych metal, and stoner influences into a thick sludge of riffs and menacing bellows. Hailing from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Pigs were formed by vocalist Matt Baty, guitarists Sam Grant and Adam Ian Sykes, bassist John-Michael Hedley, and drummer Ewan Mackenzie. Influenced by Black Sabbath and Monster Magnet, the band shares a similar love for noise as contemporaries Part Chimp and Hey Co

MASSIMO PUPILLO/SREFANO PILIA

The result of a long period of study and retirement in a house in the Bologna countryside in the first three months of 2018, Kenosis renews the meeting between Stefano Pilia and Massimo Pupillo (already together on several tours of ZU and in the Zu93 project, together with David Tibet). A Greek word of Gnostic derivation (literally meaning « emptying »), Kenosis is the result of a process of composition that saw the two musicians move away from their usual writing methods and from the conventional use of their instruments, to push themselves towards a sound, only apparently electronic, at the limit between the organic and inorganic world.

JESSICA MOSS

Montreal violinist Jessica Moss has performed and recorded with a wide spectrum of ensembles over the last two decades. Best known as a permanent member of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra, she was also a founding member of avant-klezmer group Black Ox Orkestar, recorded and toured with the Vic Chesnutt band for the two albums released on Constellation, and worked extensively with Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista. She has also performed and recorded as a guest with many of Montreal’s best known artists, most recently with Big|Brave on their acclaimed 2016 record for Southern Lord. She was featured in Jem Cohen’s Empires of Tin project, and joined members of Godspeed, Fugazi, White Magic and Dirty Three to perform the live score to Cohen’s film We Have An Anchor in various locations at Europe and the USA. Most recently she’s been collaborating and performing with the band Laniakea, featuring Daniel O’Sullivan (Ulver, Grumbling Fur, Æthenor, This Is Not This Heat) and Massimo Pupillo (Zu).

TIM SHAW
Tim Shaw is a sound artist interested in the relationship between site and technology. Presenting work through musical performances, installations and site-responsive interventions his practice attempts to expose the mechanics of systems and to reveal the hidden aspects of technology through sound. His practice is anchored in the creative use of field recordings and modular synthesisers, he uses a variety of self-constructed technologies to playback and manipulate recordings to create complex sonic environments. He is interested in appropriating communication technologies to explore how these altered devices might change the way we experience the world.

PHILL NIBLOCK
Phill Niblock (b. 1933, USA) is an artist whose fifty-year career spans minimalist and experimental music, film and photography. Since 1985, he has served as director of Experimental Intermedia, a foundation for avant-garde music based in New York with a branch in Ghent, and curator of the foundation’s record label XI. Known for his thick, loud drones of music, Niblock’s signature sound is filled with microtones of instrumental timbres that generate many other tones in the performance space. In 2013, his diverse artistic career was the subject of a retrospective realised in partnership between Circuit (Contemporary Art Centre Lausanne) and Musée de l’Elysée. The following year Niblock was honoured with the prestigious Foundation for Contemporary Arts John Cage Award.

TURNING JEWELS INTO WATER
Turning Jewels Into Water, the deep-beat ceremonial think-tank that sees the coming together of percussionist/rhythm-prophet Ravish Momin and Haitian experimental electronic engineer Val Jeanty, are set to expose the contaminating realities of our dysfunctional, dystopian present with an infectious blast of Blade Runner-esque retro-future. Half-organic, half-machine, total binary breakdown; their incendiary debut release, Which Way Is Home?, plots an emphatically liberated path. We would do well to follow it.
The duo’s alliance was initiated in the fall of last year in Brooklyn, NY, during a jam session at Pioneer Works, the creative locus for prime multi-disciplinary misadventure, where Momin held down an artist-in-residence slot – but that pact has rapidly evolved into a honed ritual revelation, where disembodied voices rise up amid scattered rim-shots and digital detritus, territories formerly deciphered in the linguistic dreams of hip-priest poet Nathaniel Mackey, where Martian phantasms encrypt gnostic cyphers between the tributaries of burnt-down cabling.

VEDA
Based on their own interpretation of James M. Cain’s classic novel « Mildred Pierce », Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock (Baby Fire, von Stroheim, etc.) and Alwntr (ex-OMSQ) team up and deliver a dystopian soundtrack to one of the greatest American stories of the 20th century. They both imagine alternative chapters that draw Mildred’s fate into murder, poisonous gardening, humiliation and vengeance.
Preface, their debut EP, was released in August 2017.
Since September 2017, Cécile Gonay (Seesayle, Baby Fire) has been a recurring guest on violin.
The band has played shows with Jarboe + Father Murphy, Jozef Van Wissem, Ensemble Economique and Kevin Thomson (Enablers).

PAUL DE JONG
Run a quick internet search for Paul de Jong’s name, and one word pops up again and again in reference to his music: “genreless.” That description has been appended to his output since his time in The Books, the celebrated collage-pop duo he co-founded with Nick Zammuto, and their breakthrough album, The Lemon of Pink, which featured a sublime combination of found sounds, samples pulled from old records (guitar, piano, and cello melodies), and glitchy vocals that pulled as much from experimental electronic music as they did from Americana. After the band broke up in the late ‘00s, de Jong made his solo debut in 2015 with IF, a record that could be considered a continuation of The Books’ sound. It showcased de Jong doing what he knows best, pulling samples from his meticulously curated record collection, and adding a joyous mixture of pop, jazz, and sounds made with everyday household items. It was a wondrous record with an uncanny joie de vivre that’s hard to describe.

ELI KESZLER
Eli Keszler is a New York based artist, composer and percussionist. Keszler’s installations, music and visual work have appeared at Lincoln Center, MIT List Center, 67 Ludlow, Victoria & Albert Museum, Sculpture Center, The Kitchen, South London Gallery, Hessel Museum, Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Luma-Foundation, Centraal Museum in Utrecht, Barbican-St. Lukes, Walker Art Museum, LAX Art, and Greater New York at MoMa PS1. His work has been featured in Frieze, Bomb Magazine, The New York Times, Wire Magazine, The Washington Post, Gramophone, Modern Drummer and Modern Painters among others. He has released solo records for Empty Editions, Esp-Disk’, PAN and REL records. As a composer Keszler has received commissions from the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, ICE Ensemble, Brooklyn String Orchestra and So Percussion. Keszler is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and was a 2016 New York Foundations for the Arts fellow.

NOCHEXXX
Steadfast at the fringes and fronds of UK electronica since the late ’90s, Dave Henson a.k.a. NOCHEXXX has previously done the do for Ramp Recordings, Actress’ Werk Discs, Type and Alien Jams over the last few years, forging a sort of eldritch, radiophonic cyberpunk that frankly sound like f**k-all out there. OK there are plenty of artists working with cranky, heatsick synth and drum machines right now, but few others do it with such an unhinged grasp of groove and feel for intricate sequence derangement. It’s a fever dream of clattering yet deft machine funk, serving saltiest styles running the gamut from Drexciyan tics to the apocalyptic Shangaan Disco deviation, thru to combustible garden shed techno experiments and rudeboy salutes. Expect a dubplates set on the night with visuals from Plastic Horse.

ThanKs for your time and reading.

All the best.

Alain
