FRANCISCO LOPEZ
Francisco López is internationally recognized as one of the main figures on the stage of sound art and experimental music. His experience in the field of sound creation and work with environmental recordings covers a period of more than thirty five years, during which he has developed an impressive sound universe that is completely personal and iconoclastic and based on profound listening to the world.
Francisco López’s sound performances are something beyond a “normal” musiconcert. An intense and rich sonic immersive experience in the dark, with a surround multi-channel sound system and blindfolds provided for the audience. Virtual worlds of sound created out of a myriad of original sources collected all over the world -from rainforests and deserts to factories and buildings from multiple locations in the six continents- and mutated and evolved during years of studio work through the master compositional skills of López’s universe.” The space is reconfigured with a multi-channel surround system around the audience, which is placed in seats arranged in concentric circles facing the outside array of speakers. The performer operates from the center of the space (not on
stage), in order to be able to control live the sound as is heard by the audience.
RICHARD YOUNGS
Born in Cambridge and raised in the Fens, Richard Youngs began making music at the start of the seventies. His early work centred on the family piano. When this was sold in the late seventies, however, the classical guitar and cassette recorder became his instruments of choice, along with anything at hand that made a sound. From then on he has played any number of roles with bands such as Astral Social Club, Concrete Hedge, No Deserts, Jandek and Future Pilot A.K.A. Recent collaborative work with Andrew Paine, Heatsick, Kawabata Makoto and John Clyde-Evans also show him as a highly social musician.
His catalogue of releases wanders into all kinds of zones over a vast array of albums on various labels including his No Fans imprint: they include accapella, guitars, pipes or electronics and come out of solitude and in partnership with atmospheres that range from fragmental folk to all-out fuzz.
HELEN MONEY
Alison Chesley, known also by her stage name Helen Money, is a classically trained cellist who draws her inspiration not only from Pablo Casals and Shostakovich but Jimi Hendrix and The Minutemen. She began playing the cello at the age of 8 in her hometown of Los Angeles, and through her undergrad and graduate studies, steered a course towards a career in classical music. While in Chicago attending Northwestern University, however, her focus shifted towards the rock music she had always loved. The instigation came from Jason Narducy, a singer/songwriter inspired by Bob Mould, who was looking for a cellist to perform new material with him. Together they formed the band Jason & Alison, then Verbow, becoming a force on Chicago’s active club scene. They came to the attention of Epic Records and released two recordings for the label, produced by Bob Mould and Brad Wood respectively. Alas, like many major label signings from that era they were dropped unceremoniously and disbanded. At a crossroads of sorts, Alison decided to go full steam ahead in pursuit of a career outside of classical music. She began a busy period as a solo artist, especially on Chicago’s then thriving studio scene, where she played on over 100 albums including those by Bob Mould, Broken Social Scene, Anthrax, Mono, Russian Circles, Disturbed and Poi Dog Pondering. She began composing music for films, theater and dance including two world premiers with the modernist icon Shirley Mordine. And, in 2007, Alison wrote the first Helen Money album and released it on her own label, Cellobird Records. Since then, she’s recorded three additional albums as Helen Money, the latest of which, Become Zero, is available on Thrill Jockey Records. Helen Money has toured the world several times over opening for bands such as Sleep, Shellac, Earth, Mono, Neurosis, Magma and Jarboe including a 2015 appearance on The David Letterman Show with Bob Mould and an appearance at the 2012 ATP Festival in London curated by Portishead. In 2011, Alison moved back to Los Angeles where she recently completed a month long, weekly residency headlining at LA’s Complex, a mecca for metal, post-rock and experimental music.
HIGH WOLF
High Wolf have been creating his own mix of world music obsession, electronic sound research and psychedelic experimentations since debuting in 2009 on Not Not Fun Records. Since then he has released albums on various labels (Holy Mountain, Rocket Recordings, Leaving Records, Shelter Press, Diskant) and toured across the globe, from Japan to USA, from Brazil to Russia, China or Australia. High Wolf has collaborated, live or on recordings, with lots of contemporary musicians such as Low Jack, Sun Araw, Gnod or Astral Social Club.
QUASI UNA FANTASIA
QUF is a duo influenced by the music of John Cage (electronics, experimentations, toy piano…) and noise where the lyric voice of Christina is the most important element ! Diamanda Galas is not far but also Meredith Monk. To hear with eyes and to see with ears !
BELLY HOLE FREAK
Born under the bad sign of a dirty blues crazy wind, Belly Hole Freak one man band has moved to a new set basically influenced by delta blues, early swing, Dixieland, inspired by giants as Howlin’ Wolf, Captain Beefheart, Robert Johnson, Tom Waits…..
The intent of Belly Hole Freak is to use a theatrical language melted into the music, trying to communicate trough “nonsense” funny words.
All the best.
